Decrypting ZIP Files on Macintosh Systems

OIT provides software for Windows users that allows them to create and send encrypted ZIP files. While we do not currently offer a software package that allows Mac users to create encrypted ZIPs, Stuffit Expander allows you to decrypt encrypted .zip files. This software is available from the Apple website.

To decrypt and expand encrypted .zip files:

     1. Download and install Stuffit Expander from the OIT Software Downloads site.

     2. Open Stuffit Expander.

     3. Drag the encrypted .zip file to the Stuffit Window.

     4. Type the password for the encrypted .zip file.

There are several important notes concerning the encryption process:

  • Files opened using Stuffing Expander will no longer be encrypted. The original encrypted file will remain encrypted, the contents will be copied separately and are unencrypted.
  • If you received the file to someone else, they will need to provide the password they set on the file. It is not safe to send this password via e-mail. We recommend providing the password by telephone.
  • The version of Stuffit available for download from the Apple website does not allow encryption of files, only decryption and expansion.
