Do you really have to lock your screen every time you get up, even if it’s only for a few minutes?
It depends. Employees need to use common sense in all these recommendations. Locking your computer when you leave it is always a good idea, but many issues can influence whether or not you do so. You should consider questions such as: Will your computer be in sight the whole time? Will your office door be in sight? Are you in an isolated location with no traffic or are people in and out of your area all day?
It is wise to remember that no matter how quickly you intend to get back to your computer, there are always interruptions and distractions that pull us away longer, so locking your computer is a good idea. At the very least, you should also have your screensaver set to activate after 30 minutes of inactivity and require a password to deactivate it.
Also, there are devices like thumbprint readers which make un-locking your screen extremely convenient. These can help offset the inconvenience imposed by a locking screensaver.
