Get & Configure McAfee VirusScan& Norton Anti-Virus to Auto-Update with the Latest Virus Definitions

McAfee VirusScan and Norton Anti-Virus are available as downloads from the OIT Software page.

McAfee Virus Scan for Windows XP/2000

If you installed the Notre Dame licensed version of McAfee Virus Scan or if you installed Take Charge for Windows, your computer is already setup to auto-update daily.

 

Norton Anti-Virus 10 for Mac OS X

IMPORTANT: You will need to know your Administrator Password. Make sure you remove all instances of Virex before you install Norton.

  1. When you download Norton 10.0 for Mac OS X from the OIT Software site, be SURE to use the link that corresponds to the browser you are currently using.
  2. Double-click the nav10corp.dmg or nav10corp.zip file and in the next window click on the 'Norton Antivirus 10.0 Corporate.'
  3. Double-click on the Norton Anti-virus Installer.
  4. Click Continue at the Welcome screen.
  5. Click Continue for the 'Important Information' and at the License agreement, then click Agree.
  6. The next window will ask you to select a destination to which you would like to install Norton AntiVirus. Select the volume you would like to use. Click Install.
  7. You will need to enter your Administrator username and password. Click 'Continue Installation.'
  8. Click the Logout button when prompted.
  9. After logging back in, open the volume you selected earlier and open the Applications folder. Double-click the Norton AntiVirus alias.
  10. Click on the Live Update button.
  11. Click 'Update Everything Now.'
  12. When the update is finished, click 'Quit.'

Norton will notify you when its virus definitions appear out of date.

 

Norton Anti-Virus 7.2 for Mac OS 9.x

IMPORTANT: You will need to remove Virex before installing Norton.

  1. After you've finished downloading the Norton Anti-Virus for Mac OS 9 installer from the OIT Software site, double-click it to begin the installation.
  2. Click Yes at the message about turning off virus scanning while you decompress the file.
  3. In the Next window click on the NAV for OS 9.2, then click Install Norton.
  4. You will get the following message: You appear to be installing software do you want Norton to suspend the alerts of virus like activity while the program is in use?
  5. Click Remember.
  6. Click Continue.
  7. Click Accept for the License agreement.
  8. Click Install.
  9. Click OK.
  10. The next screen will ask you to setup your virus protection preferences. Choose Standard and Scan all known formats.
  11. Click Set Preferences and then click Continue.
  12. Click Restart.
  13. Once your computer restarts double-click Norton.
  14. Click Live Update.
  15. Click Update Everything Now.
  16. Click Restart.
  17. When your computer finishes restarting, double click Live Update.
  18. Click Schedule.
  19. Click New.
  20. Type in a name.
  21. Under frequency choose Monthy.

Norton is automatically configured to run updates Monthly.
