What should we do with our copies of forms from other departments (HR, payroll) which require SSNs? Is it sufficient to blackout the SSN and still keep a copy?
Most handwritten forms can’t be redacted (“blacked out”) effectively, as the old ink and impression remain visible. A photocopy of a redacted form (the original of which is then shredded) would be one solution. Cutting the SSN from the page and shredding it with a cross-cut shredder would be another effective method.
